Below are some Links that describe Additional Dwelling Units (ADUs) (Granny flats) and their zoning ordinances.
Many communities nationwide are adopting zoning that allow ADUs. It would good to see them available to all neighborhoods.

A two page excerpt describing "Granny flats" and their issues is from the excellent book "Little House on a Small Planet" by Shay Salomon Page 1 Page 2 www.littlehouseonasmallplanet.com Use your browser's back button to return to this page. |
These pictures show some structures in our neighborhood that could be ADUs. Some are separate apartments, some offices, some just storage. The point is they can look pretty nice and blend in well with the architecture of the main dwellings. |
| Some community regulations are more restrictive than others. For example, nearly all communities require homeowner occupancy of one of the residential units, but the requirement varies widely: Seattle (WA) allows homeowners who can present ‘good cause’ to live elsewhere for up to three years. Most communities specify that ADUs be limited in size and be designed to harmonize architecturally with the neighborhood. Certainly any ordinance change would have to discourage ADUs from turning into crowded student housing in neighborhoods close to colleges. | ![]() |
